Do I need a commercial auto policy?
Most personal auto insurance carriers will not cover a vehicle that maybe used for work-related activity. The only instance in which your vehicle maybe related to your work is when you use it as a way of transportation from your house to your place of work.
Some policies may be more lenient than others, but you must be extra careful and review your policy. The major problem is when self-employed people think that because they are not enrolled in big operations and are rather a small type of business, they will be exempt from being considered commercial usage.
There are some personal auto policies that may be endorsed for a “Artisanal” usage, but even then, they can be very restrictive.
Although, it is true that a commercial policy may be more expensive than a personal auto policy, it is worth it to make sure that you are fully covered. Remember, an accident can cost you a lot of money.
A rule of thumb to see if you may need a commercial auto policy is if you carry tools in your vehicle, if you go to various work sites during the day, if you own a van with no seats, or if your pickup truck is a 1-ton or dually.
If you are not sure whether your vehicle should have a commercial auto policy, consult our professional insurance agents.
